Shelter In Place Incident at Windsor Middle School Today

Posted Date: 02/22/24 (02:05 PM)

Dear Windsor Community:

At approximately 11:20 a.m. today, a series of phone calls were made which constituted a bomb threat against Windsor Middle School. Two of the calls were made directly to WMS and a third call was made to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s dispatch.  Due to specifics in the threat, there was additional concern that it may have been a ploy to trigger an evacuation, so police recommended a shelter-in-place. Police and emergency services were on site in minutes, and their investigation, which included a consultation with the Northern California Regional Intelligence Center (a part of the federal agency of Homeland Security), deemed the threat to be non-credible. In addition, it appears that similar threats may have been called in around the country.

School resumed as normal at approximately 12:45 p.m. Families that chose to pick up their children were put through the District’s request reunion process. Students who remained behind were sent to lunch, and then concluded their school day as normal.

While incidents like these are always alarming, we continue to be heartened that the systems in place, including our relationship with law enforcement and emergency services, worked as intended and kept students and staff safe throughout the process. We will have support staff on site for staff and students in the wake of this incident, for those who need it.

The safety of our staff and students is always our top priority, and we feel grateful to live in a community such as Windsor that offers such strong partnerships with other local institutions. If you have additional questions or concerns, please reach out to Superintendent Jeremy Decker (jdecker@wusd.org), WMS principal Angela West (awest@wusd.org) or Coordinator of District Communications, Heather Bailey (hbailey@wusd.org).

Thanks and best regards,

Your Windsor Unified School District Team
